Immigration is a hot-button issue, and not the only
relatable topic that acclaimed singer and composer
Fuat Tuaç presents on his aptly named sophomore
album The Immigrant (May 26). Here, Fuat shares a
collection of stories and experiences about life in
Canada as a 30-something foreigner. “I wanted to
talk about my journey,” Fuat explains. “I wanted to
talk about the people I’ve met along the way; my
experience inside and outside the jazz world; what I
anticipated from Canada and what I’ve found; how
people see me and how I see them. I wanted to talk
about all of this, and inspire people.”
Backed by some of the finest musicians on the
Canadian scene, Fuat is joined by hypercreative guitarist Eric St-Laurent, trumpeter Kevin
Turcotte, Juno-nominee Eric West on drums, and Jordan O’Connor on double bass as he tells his
melodic stories in English, French, and his native Turkish. He invites celebrated vocalist Kim
Richardson for a duet on Chez Moi, and renowned Istanbul singer Yesim Akin joins him on the
traditional song Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim, echoing hymns from the Asia Minor across the ocean.
The Immigrant is a body of work reflective of a sensitive, inquisitive, and cultured mind of the 21st
century. Through a collection of jazz styles as eclectic as life on planet earth, Fuat combines the
melancholic, but inspiring title track The Immigrant with the grooving Moss Park, a reflection on the
homelessness in a Toronto park, and quirky, relatable closer Who’s That Man? speaks to everyone
who has ever been dumped and can’t resist spying on their former lover on social media. “Social
media rules our lives. We use it for so many different purposes, besides trying to give people the
impression that our lives are perfect. Many people really do spy on others,” Fuat explains.
The Turkish-Canadian singer elaborates on his experiences as a single man trying to look for love
online, but he always has a sense of humor about it. “Online dating has its own international
vernacular, with its own ground rules - infraction may come with grave consequences. I wanted to
talk about how impossible it can seem, post-COVID, to meet someone offline.” Ultimately, The
Immigrant seeks to speak to everyone, regardless of their country of origin. “I think,” Fuat smiles,
“The eclectic nature of the album lends itself to that.” Please enjoy it.

about

FUAT TUAC Toronto, Ontario

It’s not often you hear a singer that you just can’t pigeon hole, and Turkish-born Furat Tuac is gratefully just that man. The best you can say is that he’s Mark Murphy-ISH, as he’s as flexible as Turkish Taffy, but he has extra bohemia like Gil Scott Heron as well. ... more
